Not long ago, I read a disturbing piece of news about the preventive measures in banning soccer and related ball games in the void decks of some housing estates. Apparently, the town councils had decided to install barbed wires and nails on the ceilings and walls as counter measures! This was because of complaints about the noise generated by the ball bouncing off walls. I feel that children deserve to have a space close to home to play and relax and I am quite worried that this would lead to a generation of kids with the PC as their best friend.
For many children growing up in a concrete jungle, one of the playgrounds will naturally be the void deck. It was a place where "kueh" and rojak hawkers and the occasional otak uncle would sell their wares. A hangout where kids gathered to play pretend or to just for a simple game of passing the ball around. Somewhere where my grandma would gather with the other senior citizens to make a pittance by trimming the loose ends from clothings. A place where my guy buddy would (discretely) go to ring up his crush(at the public phone) for the utopian dream of a movie date with her. More importantly, it offered a common gathering area for the community of people residing in the block. It was a place of never-ending activities. (If I see this anywhere now, I have to check my watch because I might have time-travelled back to 1990.)
Now, vendors hardly come back anymore. They do not have licenses and are banned. My grandmother has passed away along with the dying trade of cutting loose ends from badly manufactured clothes. The public phone has now been replaced by the all-essential cell phone. With the stringent control over activities in the these void decks presently, I can forsee less and less children playing there. Now, the void deck has become a mere transition space for most people because we no longer use it anymore. Void of activities, void of life, thats what the "void" deck is now. Come to think of it, it is even aptly named.
